Inside an insulating block (4) e.g. of polyurethane foam, the cavity is divided into a work-chamber (3) for objects to be cooled and having a common wall with an adjacent shallower chamber (1) holding a cooling medium, e.g. liq. N2, which when evapd. enters the work-chamber via holes (2h) uniformly spaced in the work-chamber floor. Evapn. is aided by a heater (5c) below the holes. The common base (1e) of work-chamber and cooling medium chamber is sepd. from the insulating block recess by a gap (1d) through which extend only very small end supports (1c) for the combined chambers. An insulating cover (4b) above the work-chamber, and also e.g. of foam, can slide open sideways.
