The arrangement has a microwave oscillator (17), a mode converter (12) and a plasma chamber (1,21). The mode converter converts linearly polarised microwaves into circularly polarised waves, whereby the H11-fundamental wave propagates by preference. A cylindrical horn waveguide (10) has its input directly or indirectly connected to the mode converter and its output connected to the plasma chamber. A round waveguide (11) in which the H11-wave propagates is located between the mode converter and the horn waveguide. The horn waveguide is conical and smooth or corrugated. The plasma (70) is exposed to a static magnetic field of given intensity directed at right angles to the electric field of the electromagnetic waves. Several magnets (6,7) lie around the plasma chamber. ADVANTAGE - Large plasma volume.
