A lock has a bolt (10) which is driven into its locking position by the rotation of the key which engages recesses in the lower edge of the bolt (10). The bolt (10) is held in its locking position by a spring (3) or by an electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic device. The upper edge of the bolt has four teeth which engage a row of teeth attached to a vertically sliding plate (1) which is pressed against the bolt (10). There are thus four locking positions through which the bolt (10) must pass before it is completely withdrawn from the bolt socket whilst the spring (3) applies a force tending to press the bolt into its socket.
