The tap has a three-sided curvilinear polygonal section at the forming end (3). Inserts (5) of a hard material such as sintered carbide are brazed into longitudinal slots running along the tap at the three positions of max. dia. carrying the highest forming stress. The inserts are conveniently of circular section and extend over the active length of the tap. The tap is ground to produce the required thread form in the inserts. ADVANTAGE - Extended tool life.
