The device comprises a radiation transmitting device (1) which is preferably arranged on the moving object (30) and emits the radiation in differently coded form (52, 53). The emitted radiation is evaluated by a radiation receiving device (33n +/- i), which is preferably arranged along the movement path of the object movement, in order to determine at least the location of the object on the basis of the differently coded radiation which is received in a non-overlapping manner.
