ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTIONCommunications Systems particularly suited formanipulating stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), orsimilar tunable laser amplification effects, to achieveimproved means for selecting an optical signal frommany such signals carried on a single fiber. Thisdisclosure also describes means for producing atunable, spectrally-narrow line to power this laseramplification. The disclosure also describes animproved polarization-sweeping device which allows thesystem to handle variable polarization of signals, whennecessary. It also dislcoses other subsystems andapparatus facilitating the optimum signal-tapping pro-cess, including heterodyning procedures, a low-band-width channel-indentification means, and a new laser,all particularly useful in the system described. Thelaser is also useful in other systems where a tunable,spectrally narrow, stable source is required.
