In a reciprocal architecture fibre optic gyroscope, a single mode filter P is used to reduce bias drift resulting from changing birefringence of the sensor optical fibre coil F. A birefringent element BSMG is provided in the vicinity of the filter P and has a dispersion which exceeds the coherence length of the source S. This reduces unwanted bias and thus significantly relaxes the requirements for extinction of the mode filter P. IMAGE
