A regenerative heat exchanger has sets of sheet metal plates forming a storage mass rotated while heated by a stream of hot dusty combustion fumes, and in turn yielding the heat to incoming combustion air. NOx content in the fumes is reduced by reaction with an added medium in the presence of a catalytic coating formed in the plates in specific zones of those into which the storage mass is divided in the flow direction. Only those plates are coated with temp. exceeding the condensation temp. of the reaction prod.. Spray cleaners are incorporated between the coated plates zones and an uncoated zone.
