HoldridgeABSTRACT OF THE INVENTIONA highly effective modular passive solar energy heatingunit is provided for heating an enclosed living or working spaceemploying phase change heat storage material which is clearlyoptically transparent to visible light rays when in its high-stored-energy liquid state, thereby advantageously enabling a view-er to see through it clearly and which is translucent milky whitewhen in its low-stored-energy solid state for providing pleasantillumination to the enclosed space when first illuminated by sun-light in the initial part of the morning. This phase changematerial is in a fluid-tight container having two opposite surfaceareas transparent to sunlight, this phase change material beingpolyethylene glycol having a heat of fusion of about 33 to 37cal./gm. (4,170 to 4,670 Btu's per cubic ft.), a melting point ofabout 13 to 25°C (55°F to 77°F), a specific gravity of about 1.125at 20°C, and desirable isotropic freezing and melting characteris-tics with only a very modest change in volume during phase change,and the unit additionally contains at least one layer of clearlyoptically transparent glazing facing the sunlight and preferablyincluding a layer of insulation, which transmits short wavelengthsolar radiation while blocking longer wavelength heat rays forretaining thermal energy within the enclosed living or workingspace with which the units is associated. In preferred embodi-ments of the invention, there are two layers of transparent glazingin closely spaced parallel relationship with respect to the fluid-tightcontainer in which the phase change material is held, these twolayers being positioned between the incident solar radiation andthe transparent container.--1--
