Aqueous compsn. comprises a buffer solution for maintaining the pH of the dilution water at about 7 and contains per litre of solution 70-304 g, pref. 150 g, of zinc sulphate and 67-267 g, pref. 140 g, of zinc acetate. Pref. the zinc sulphate/zinc acetate ratio is 0.7-1.5, pref. 1.1. The solution may also contain calcium sulphate (87-348 g, pref. 135 g), magnesium sulphate (50-200 g, pref. 100 g), ammonium molybdate (0.4-3.6 g, pref. 1 g), anhydrous sodium tetraborate (10-40 g, pref. 20 g), copper sulphate (12-56 g, pref. 30 g), manganese sulphate (12-50 g, pref. 29 g), citric acid (20 g), monosodium citrate (12 g) monopotassium phosphate (3 g) and water (0.760 l). Treatment of zinc deficiency in maize crops. The present compositions avoid toxicity and/or availability problems associated with previously used zinc sulphate, zinc nitrate and zinc chloride. The solution may be used preventatively by application to the soil or curatively by foliar application. The mixture is applied at the pre- or post-emergent stage using 10 l of soln. per hectare, which is diluted with 500-2000 l, pref. 1000 l, of water before application. Production of 5000 kg/hectare of maize requires about 700 g of zinc (as metal).
