Bulky textured surfaces, patches or designs with a matt finish are obtd. by applying a coating of binder resin including particles which can be expanded by heating or other post treatment. The coating may be applied to textiles, paper, film, sheet etc. by dipping, spraying or printing techniques so that the treated zones will have a non-slip surface and provide greater protection from wear or mechanical or thermal shock. Applicable to e.g. clothing, automobile trim, etc. The coating compsn. may be coloured or otherwise modified, e.g. by inclusion of fillers, fibres, metallic platelets, etc. An example compsn. comprised 20 pts. of medium viscosity acrylic resin; 65 pts. expandable microspheres of 6-15 microns dia. of polyvinylidene chloride contg. 15% neopentene; and 15 pts. pigments.
