Catalyst comprising a support, Cu and a redox couple (forming a redox system with Cu) are claimed, with the improvement that the Cu is chemically bonded to the support. Also claimed are stable redox catalysts contg. Cu chemically bonded to a support, in which the Cu is mostly divalent but the Cu on the free surface is substantially monovalent. The catalyst can be used e.g., for olefin oxidn., vinyl chloride prodn., exhaust gas purificn., H2 prodn. from water gas or Co oxidn., and are esp. useful for low-temp. oxidn. of CO to CO2 in tobacco products (e.g. in cigarette filters).
