The automatic hotel key distribution system for room keys includes a device for reading the invoice document held by a guest to determine the amount paid. This is then compared with a signal held by a tariff memory and if satisfactory a mechanical system releases the required room key to the quest. The system may also include a dial or keyboard for entering a room code, and memory holding the corresponding code. The key release mechanism may then be activated on comparison of the two signals.
