A one-piece drilling tool comprising cutting studs housed in a hardened steel tool body employs studs in which diamonds are embedded in the surface and throughout the body of the stud. A large number of alternative shapes of stud are available and interchangeable to suit the characteristics of the rock formation to be drilled. Tool is used for deep well drilling esp. in soft rock formations. The cutting studs have a long life since if surface diamonds are eroded or broken away, further stones come into use as the stud wears down.
