Hybrid ion exchange resins (i.e. resins having properties of both gelled resins and porous resins of prior art, apart from their own props.) of parent patent prepd. by adding a monomer, a free radical initiator and a crosslinking agent to a macroreticular copolymer mixed with water, are improved in that the hybrid copolymer comprises (1) a porous copolymer (1) support with a crosslinked macrostructure formed from a polyunsatd. monomer and an ethylenically unsatd. monomer and (2) a crosslinked gelled copolymer (II) filling the pores of (I) and formed from a polyunsatd. monomer and an ethylenically unsatd. monomer. The prepn. of the hybrid resin comprises imbibing particles or beads of the copolymer (I) with a liquid mixt. of the monomers forming (II), polymerising the monomers and then introducing ion exchange functional gps. into the obtd. polymer complex. The system differs from prior art prods. which are also based on gelled resins and macroreticular resins in that copolymer (I) may be itself exhibit ion exchange characteristics (cf. inorg. or polymeric supports, e.g. PVC, polyethylene) thus giving a prod. with improved overall capacity. The system is heterogeneous and has improved stability and leaic characteristics.
