The hydraulic mechanism comprises a main piston moved to and fro in a cylinder by fluid under pressure, and driving an auxiliary piston in a further cylinder of smaller cross-section. The main piston (3) drives two auxiliary ones (12,13) working in separate smaller-diameter cylinders (10,11), and fluid under pressure is delivered simultaneously to one side of the main piston and to one of the auxiliary ones (10), moving them in the same direction. This causes discharge of the fluid from the other side of the main piston at a lower pressure than the inlet pressure, and from the second auxiliary cylinder at a higher pressure than the latter. High-pressure fluid is subsequently delivered to the other side of the main piston and to the second auxiliary one, causing movement in the opposite direction and fluid discharge in the same manner from the main cylinder (2) and the second auxiliary one.
