PURPOSE:To provide the titled device capable of conducting selective printing operation rapidly and smoothly, by a method wherein the rotation of a lift rod for selectively lifting either one of upper and lower types through nipping pieces is interlocked with the movement of a swinging rod which is driven by a motor. CONSTITUTION:When the swinging rod 33 is rotated in the direction of the arrow by a motor drive, the amount of rotation of the lift rod 29 at a position (a) is larger than that at a position (b), and also the stroke of a projection 9a moving upward is larger at the solid-line position [a shaft 29a is at the position (a)] than at the two-dotted line position [the shaft 29a is at the position (b)]. In a type-selecting operation, the shaft 29a of the lift rod 29 is moved vertically by selecting either one of engagement parts 18b, 18c of a change-over controlling member 18, and the lift amount of a type piece 6 is selected to be large or small so that an upper type or a lower type is brought to a printing position.
