The physical parameters are constantly monitored to provide data such as precipitation over particular time periods. The data is recorded in a static memory operating in conjunction with a microprocessor to obviate the need for tape cassettes. A rain meter comprises a funnel which fills two troughs mounted to balance in opposition on a pivot assembly. This operates a switch which is addressed by a processing unit (10). This comprises a microprocessor (11) which receives the switch signal and also clock signals from a generator (13). Batteries (15,16) provide the power and the microprocessor communicates directly with a memory (12) into which the data is stored together with time and date information from the generator. An interface (14) permits communication with a display and data reconstitution unit (8) containing a printer (18) and keyboard (20) together with a cassette recording unit (19).
