The stock enables all species of conifers to be grafted. The resulting tree is selected to combine the correct type of root structure for the soil conditions to be combined with an upper grafted part which is of the particular species needed. The stock is also selected to provide the required height, whether dwarf or full size. Two main types of conifer are to be used for the root stock, one being the thuya conifer, for most soils and resistance to frost. The other stock is the black cypress for planting in very wet conditions.
