Vibratory hammer comprises a frame connected to a hammer member. Within the frame is mounted at least one drive motor for two flyweights. The frame is supported by springs on a clamping device connected to an anvil member. The frame is in the form of a housing in two halves surrounding the anvil member on all sides. The dividing surface between the two halves is located in the vertical plane which passes through the geometrical axis of the drive motor, or perpendicularly to this plane. In operation, the whole frame is set in vertical vibratory motion, causing the hammer member to impinge periodically on the lower or upper surface of the anvil member, according to their relative positions. This imparts downwardly or upwardly directed impacts to the clamping device, so that piles clamped in it are pulled out of, or driven into the soil.
