The ore or concentrate is leached with dil. H2SO4 at pH 2-2.8 and filtered to obtain a Co soln. which is oxidised, esp. via air, HNO3 or H2O2. The Co is then extracted from the soln. into an organic solvent contg. nitro-naphthols and/or alkyl nitro-naphthols, but esp. 1-nitro-naphthol. The Co is removed from the organic phase by a cobalt (II)-salt soln. contg. H2SO4 at pH 1, followed by electrodeposition of the Co from H2SO4 soln. onto hard lead electrodes. An economic mass prodn. process with no technical difficulties in continuous operation is provided.
