Inside the mould cavity are internally cooled plates, located at a distance from the mould wall corresp. with the precalculated thickness of the skin of solidified metal formed at the bottom outlet of the mould. The plates are coated at the bottom outlet of the mould. The plates are coated with a layer of refractory thermal insulation except on their surface facing the mould wall. For slabs over 1000 mm. wide, the plates are pref. used at least along the wide mould walls. Refractory layer is pref. thicker near the surface of the molten steel in the mould than at the bottom of the plates; and is esp. plasma-sprayed alumina. Plates are pref. located on a head providing horizontal adjustment. Used in casting large steel slabs, e.g. with cross-section 2000 x 200 mm., where plates provide an increase in skin thickness so faster slab casting speeds can be used. Clad slabs can also be cast.
