The plant is used to make seamless, hollow workpieces, esp. castings with a large wt., where the molten metal is poured into a chilled mould which is open at its upper end and pref. rotates on a verticl axis. At least the upper end of the mould is supported by conical bearing rollers located in a bearing cage. Weights can pref. be moved along the periphery of the mould to compensate for any out of balance effects created by solidification of the metal, and the mould pref. has a double wall forming a channel through which coolant is fed. The outer wall is pref. thick to carry the stress, but a thin inner wall is used to aid cooling of the metal being cast. Inserts and/or cores are used in the mould to obtain castings of various shapees. Used in the mfr. of castings with very high quality, including steel with a columnar structure where the casting is cut and bent to form a flat plate.
