Known curing agents for furan resins (made by acid catalysed (co) condensation of furfuryl alcohol with furfurol, formaldehyde, phenol, aromatics) such as beta-naphthalenesulphonic acid but esp. p-toluenesulphonic acid mixed dry with urea to give curing agents which confer a longer pot life on the resin, allow for thorough curing even of thin layers in the cold (0-10 degrees C), reduce shrinkage of the resin and can be easier mixed with the resin. The curing agent can also be made from conc. aq. soln. of the reagents by mixing the solns. in equimolar proportion and filtering and drying the resultant ppte. The curing agent is usually added as a mixture with fillers. The curing agent is esp. useful for furan.
