The container is used for growing plants, the top surface of the soil (25) being covered by an impermeable membrane (21) which prevents weed growth and undue drying out. The plants grow through holes punctured in the membrane. The top edges (23) of the container are flanged over (22) to retain the membrane, a filler compound being used as a sealant. Puncturing the holes in the membrane, facilitated by their position (29) being impressed in its surface. The bottom (30) of the container has a layer of water retaining material, watering being done through side holes (27) or by means of small slits (24) in the membrane.
