摘要

Determn. of magnesium in body fluids comprises measuring the change in extinction which occurs on addn. of magnesium ions to a xylidyl blue reagent in alkaline medium. Instead of ethanol as solvent for the xylidyl blue, there is used a water-miscible organic base in 20-80% (pref. 25-50%) aq. soln. Xylidyl blue is readily soluble in the solvent; refluxing is not required for the preparation of the reagent. The reagent has unlimited stability in concentrated form, and is stable for more than 3 months in diluted form. Serum protein is soluble in the solvent, so that no opalescene or turbidity occurs and a serum blank is not required. The reagent (after dilution) has the alkaline pH required for the determination, so that addition of buffer is unnecessary.
