The amplifier has its transfer factor controlled by a variable voltage, the amplifier being switchable between two distinct states, the control characteristics being mutually complimentary. The design is intended to minimise limiting effects in compression/expansion systems. The control voltage is applied in order to control an impedance (4) included in one functioning mode in a negative feedback loop, the amplifier (10) output being connected to a reference voltage across the variable impedance, the junction point feeding back to the amplifier input via a second impedance (3). In its alternative mode the amplifier output is taken from the junction of the variable impedance and an impedance (5) to ground.
