The demonstration vernier calipers are made several times larger than the usual instrument to enable it to be used as a teaching aid. The instrument has one pair of fixed and one pair of adjustable jaws (5a-b) for measuring inside and outside diameters. The moving jaws are attached to a slide (5) which carries a vernier scale (7). The fixed arm (2) has a linear scale (6). The arm is of rectangular section with a hollow centre through which passes a spring-loaded depth-measuring rod (3) held by a clamping screw (11). The inner end of the rod is located in a slot in the slide. The vernier scale is fixed to the slide by two set-screws (8) to allow easy replacement by a range of different scales. All component parts of the instrument are easily dismantled for demonstration purposes.
