Device for the surface welding of metal workpieces using the kinetic energy of the upper piece, consisting of a tubular body or cylinder contg. a piston and an accelerating mechanism for the piston. The novelty is that the gas filled cavity formed by the piston, the cylinder and the upper piece, which may be pre-shaped if required, is subjected to adiabatic compression, driving the upper piece onto a lower workpiece. The accelerator mechanism can be (a) a cartridge filled with a chemical propellant, e.g. gunpowder, or (b) an explosion chamber filled with a combustible and/or explosive gas mixt. ignited electrically, used for example, in welding parts of limited size such as electric contacts.
