1473447 Acid salts of fatty acids HOECHST AG 3 July 1975 [6 July 1974] 28031/75 Heading C2C Acidic alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts of optionally halogenated C 1-4 fatty acids are prepared by reacting said fatty acids with neutral alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts of optionally halogenated. C 1-4 fatty acids, or with basic compounds which during the course of the reaction are converted into the neutral salts, by reacting said starting materials at 20-200‹ C. by introducing them into a fluidized bed reactor, the bedbeing prepared from solid neutral salt or said solid basic compound or from resulting acid salt and being fluidized by an inert liquid or gas, and discharging resulting readily flowable acidic salt from the fluidized bed reactor continuously intermittently at the same rate as it is being formed. Liquid or dissolved fatty acid may be' introduced into the fluidized bed reactor, or liquid or molten fatty acid may be introduced into the reactor as a vapour by means of an inert gas; the neutral salt or basic compound precursor thereof may be introduced into the reactor as a solid, in solution or suspension. Fluidization of the bed may be effected with an inert gas or liquid and the bed may alternatively comprise solid neutral salt or' a basic compound precursor thereof such as an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or ammonia. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously in one or more reactors, and the starting materials may be introduced continuously at the same rate as product is discharged. The acidic salts of the formulµ 2ClCH 2 .COONa, 3ClCH 3 .COOH and CH 2 Cl.COONa.CH 3 COOH are claimed to be novel. Suitable forms of apparatus for carrying out the reaction are described.
