Filter mat for use in hydraulic works e.g., reinforcing the banks of rivers, canals, culverts etc., of the type having at least two superimposed layers partic. of coarse and fine fibres respectively, but in which fibre parts of the fine fibre layer in the form of fibre roving or wicks pushed in known manner through the coarse fibre layer pref. by needing and projecting from the free surface thereof, and a predetermined proportion of thicker plastic fibres is incorporated in the fine fibre layer. More esp., the coarse fibre layer consists of coconut fibre while the fine fibre layer consists of a plastic felt and the thicker inserted plastic fibres are pref. polypropylene fibres. Provides a reasonable compromise between transmission of ground water and retention of soil so as to allow drainage of the ground water to the water course and yet prevent this from undermining the banks.
