Mechanisms for the erosion of cohesive banks are added to a mathematical modelfor river morphology. The resulting model is two-dimensional and depth-averaged. Theoretical analyses of the model reveal the effect of the input of bank erosion products and provide insight into the process of width adjustment. A formulation in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates allows the use of a boundary-fitted computational grid in the corresponding numerical model, suited for curved rivers with a non-uniform width. The numerical model is applied to hypothetical cases and to a bend of the river Ohre in Czechoslovakia.
