The pretreated alkaline sugar beet juice is overcarbonated with CO2 to reduce the alkalinity to 0.065% CaO equivalent, the solids are removed and the juice realkalized to 0.07-0.15% CaO equivalent by adding CaO or Ca(OH)2 at 50-90 degrees C for 0.5-15.0 minutes reaction. The solids are removed and the juice is overcarbonated with CO2 to an alkalinity of 0.01-0.02% CaO equivalent. It is then realkalized to 0.01-0.03% CaO equivalent by adding pref. MgO and the final juice, for conversion to crystals of sucrose, is obtd. by filtering off the solids. A greater extn. of sugar, reduced operating costs, greater purifcn., reduced evaporator boil out requirements, better heat transfer and increased steam efficiency, are obtd.
