High-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp contains halides of monovalent and trivalent metals, esp. the halides of metals in the third sub-group, such as the rare-earth metals, SC, Y, and the lanthanides; the total moles of hte monovalent metals being equal to the total moles of the trivalent metals. The halides are pref. iodides or bromides; the trivalent metals are pref. Lanthanides; and the monovalent metals are pref. Tl, Cs, In, Na, and/or Li. The highly pure, water-free trivalent halides and the monovalent halides are pref. added to the discharge vessel in a glove-box using a protective atmos., esp. argon. Optimum light yield and lamp life are obtd.
