1362497 Electric cells UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 Aug 1972 38994/72 Heading H1B In an electric cell having an alkaline electrolyte, surfaces which would otherwise be deleteriously affected by wetting by the electrolyte are formed of a fatty polyamide. As shown, a zinc-MnO 2 cell includes a seal support disc cover with a layer 47 of fatty polyamide which contacts steel can 23 and copper current collector 39 thereby preventing the electrolyte from creeping round the seal. Hydrogen venting means 50 Comprises a tube of twisted fibre threads coated with fatty polyamide and supported within collector 39 by fatty polyamide, preventing electrolyte exuding through the venting means. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) a cast zinc electrode for a zinc-air cell has shoulders for supporting in the cell and these are coated with fatty polyamide. The electrode is also coated around its current collector wire. Instead of polyamide coatings, gaskets or seals made of polyamide may be used.
