1363072 Automatic control of attitude HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS Ltd 8 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 33236/70 Heading G3R [Also in Division F3] A guidance system for controlling the path of travel of a moving object, and, in particular, the height of a sea-skimming missile, comprises a high gain servocontrol loop into which is fed a demand input signal representing the error between the distance of the object from a surface of reference (the sea surface), as derived by a continuous wave frequency-modulated distance sensor, and a predetermined desired distance, wherein the sensor signal contains both a distance term and a rate of change of distance term due to Doppler shift (arising from relative movement between the body and the reference surface), the sensor signal being employed to derive the demand input signal whereby the presence of the rate term in the loop serves to phase-advance demanded travel path corrections. The sensor signal is averaged over a period of 0À1 seconds.
