Prepn. of psoralen and isopsoralen from Psoralea corylifolia seeds by (i) purifying the seed by milling. sieving and washing with water. (ii) extracting the treated by percolation with a solvent such as CHCl3, benzene or toluene. (iii) sepfg. the natural oils from essential oils in the mixt. obtd. from stage (ii) by repeated washing with a dilute base, e.g. NaOH (iv) evaporating the solvent from the washed extract and pptg. quantitatively crystalline psoralen by adding light petroleum, alcohol or a hydrocarbon, (v) refrigerating the mother liquor after collecting the psoralen to give crystalline isopsoralen (vi) opt. recrystallising the prods. from alcohol after charcoal treatment. Title cpds. are useful for treating psoriasis and leucoderma.
