Adhesive e.g. for paperboard, is prepd. by (1) making a starch suspension in a first vat from starch and water, (2) preparing an alkali in a second vat, (3) passing starch suspension from the first vat into a first buffer tank, and maintaining the storing in suspension at a definite concn, (4) passing alkali from the second vat into a second buffer tank, and storing it in this tank, (5) continuously supplying a definite amount of starch suspension from the first buffer tank, and a definite amount of alkali from the second buffer tank, to a first mixer, a treating to obtain a gelatinised starch, and (6) continuously supplying a definite amount of gelatinised starch from the first mixer, and a definite amount starch suspension from the first buffer tank into a second mixer, and treating to obtain the manufactured starch.
