The two types of resin, e.g. U-F and low density polyethylene with a grain size of 300-1000 mu are mixed together with a foaming agent e.g. mixed Na2CO3 and citric acid, in a hopper and the homogenised mixture passes via a worm extruder into a tube passing through a muffle in which the foam is cured to form a rigid microporous foam which is then chopped into lengths suitable for direct feed into filter tip cigarette prodn machines.
