Apparatus for freezing aqueous solutions or the like comprises a tank tiltable about a horizontal axis 25 and closed by a removable airtight cover 18 which houses at least one frame 25 which is rotated at variable speed by a motor 19 and belt system through a shaft 24 extending through the base of the tank. Liquid is frozen whilst being spread in thin layers within vials or the like (not shown) supported in bored trays mounted in the frame 25 by the rotary action, and the freezing process is performed either by circulation of cold air within the tank produced by a fan 32 mounted on the cover blowing air over cooling coils 28 and distribution means 31, or by cooling the frame 28 (Fig. 3) by means of a refrigerant introduced through the shaft 24. In a further modification, a plurality of cooling frames of figure-of-eight shape are separately or severally driven within the tank.
