PICT:1006526/C6-C7/1 A device for detecting the fermentative action of living cells on chemical substances consists of an assembly of two portions or discs 1, 2, Fig. 2, of absorbent material in contact with each other, in which the first disc 1 contains an appropriate indicating reagent in the dried state while the second disc 2 contains, also in the dried state, a chemical substance which, under the fermentative action of a given species of living cells, will form degradation products detectable by the indicating reagent, and at least one of the sides of at least one of the discs is covered with an air- and water-tight layer 3. The discs may be assembled in juxtaposition along a common secant. The device is disposed in a Petri box 4 on a layer 5 of agar-agar on which a suspension of the living cells 6 in an appropriate liquid has previously been disposed. The indicating reagent may be a pH indicator
