[Also in Group XXXVI] In a device for the creation of a magnetic preferably uniform field and comprising several mutually independent electric conductors through which respective individually adjustable currents can be passed, the magnetic potentials produced by the conductors are stated to be representable by a system of functions which are substantially mutually orthogonal at least two of which are substantially spherical harmonic functions each of an order higher than the first. The conductors may be formed by photo-etched printed-circuit laminate coils arranged in stacks 23, 24, Fig. 11, and supplied via variable potentiometers 27 from a source 26 such as a battery. The coils may be either flat as shown or spherical, and alternatively, Fig. 13, may comprise fine wires woven through a non-conductive clothlike material and connected to a multiple connector 34. The device is applicable to nuclear magnetic resonance gaussmeters and spectrometers, and much theoretical data is disclosed in the Specification.
