Potato plants are protected from attack by aphids by (a) treating the potato tubers with (b) applying to the soil in which potato tubers have been planted and prior to the appearance of the first aerial shoots and (c) introducing into the holes or drills with the potato tubers, an s-triazine of formula FORM:0990859/A5-A6/1 where R1 and R2 stand for methyl or ethyl radicals; R3, R4, R5 and R6 stand for hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl, provided that R3-6 together have a total number of carbon atoms not exceeding 6; and X stands for an oxygen or sulphur atom or an acid addition salt thereof, e.g. the hydrochloride, oxalate, p-toluene sulphonate or isethionate. The s-triazine may be employed in the form of a granular or powder composition or a solution or dispersion in water or a non-phytotoxic organic solvent. The potato tubers may be treated after they have begun to sprout. A dispersible powder comprises spestrone, calcium lignosulphonate, potassium hydrogen phthalate and the sodium salt of naphthalene sulphonic acid.ALSO:Potato plants are protected from attack by aphids by treating the potato tubers before planting with an S triazine of formula FORM:0990859/A1-A3/1 wherein R1 and R2 are methyl or ethyl radicals, R3, 1R4, R5 and R6 are hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl radicals, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in R3-R6 does not exceed 6; and X stands for oxygen or sulphur or an acid addition salt thereof. The S-triazine may be employed in the form of a powder comprising a powdered diluent, such as china clay, fuller's earth, talc or bentonite, and a wetting and/or dispersing agent, or in the form of a solution or dispersion in water or a non- phytotoxic solvent. Specified S-triazine compounds are:- 2-dimethoxyphosphinothioyl-thiomethyl-4:6-diamino-S -triazine (Menazon) and 2-dimethoxy-phosphinothioyl-thiomethyl-4-amino-6-methyl-amino-S -triazine.
