869,315. Ceramic glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Oct. 1, 1959 [Oct. 9, 1958], No. 33325/59. Class 56. A semi-crystalline ceramic is made from a composition of which at least 95% consists of 30-48% SiO 2 , 34-54% Ca 2 P 2 O 7 and 15-21% Al 2 O 3 , the weight ratio of Ca 2 P 2 O 7 to Al 2 O 3 being not less than 1À85. This composition is melted to form a homogeneous glass which is shaped to form an article which is then reheated to about 1050‹C., at a rate not exceeding 5‹C. per minute between 850‹C. and 1050‹C., until, as a result of conversion to semi-crystalline form its linear thermal coefficient between 0‹ and 300‹C. exceeds 90 x 10SP-7/SP per ‹C. Preferably the article is held for two hours at 950‹C. and ¢ hour at 1000‹C. the components may be derived from batch materials such as bone ash, feldspar or clay or from purified materials such as sand, lime, phosphoric salts, and alumina. A fining agent is not necessary but 0À1 to 1À0% of ASzOs may be added. Oxidising agents such as AS 2 O 5 , Ca(NO 3 ) 2 or Al 2 (NO 3 ) 3 may be added to neutralise reducing conditions which might reduce the phosphate. Constituents other than those already quoted should not exceed 5%. Thus there may be up to 5% of CaF 2 , MgO, ZnO, PbO, 2% of K 2 O, NazO, or LizO, 3% ZrOz.
