PICT:0756566/III/1 In a process for obtaining oil from whale flesh, comparatively large pieces of the material are heated under pressure in a cooker in which the outer layers of the material are gradually converted into a sludge; this is passed into a closed decanting chamber maintained under pressure and therein allowed to separate into layers of oil, aqueous liquid and sludge residue; the oil and the aqueous liquid and sludge are withdrawn separately and the pressure on the withdrawn aqueous liquid is released, thereby cooling it; the cooled liquid is allowed to settle, the coarse grax constituents are removed therefrom, and then the liquid is heated under pressure to a temperature above that to which the initial material was heated and evaporated under pressure, the steam thus liberated being used to heat the material in the cooker. As shown, the whale flesh is cooked in cookers 1A and 1B of the type comprising an outer pressure cylinder and an inner rotating perforated drum, operating at 4 atmospheres and 152 DEG C. A continuous stream of sludge liquid is drawn from the spaces between the rotary drums and cylinders and passed to decanters 4A and 4B respectively, from the top of which oil is removed and from the lower part of which a sludge liquid is led through a cyclone, in which pressure is released, to a strainer 5. From the strainer the liquid is taken through a settling tank 6 and pumps 7 to centrifuges 8 its temperature not falling below 90 DEG C. The liquid is then conducted to the first of three pressure evaporators 2A, 2B, 2C through a conduit 9 in which a pump is inserted to raise the pressure of the liquid to that prevailing in the evaporator 2A. The pressure evaporators 2A, 2B, 2C operate at 176 DEG C., 168 DEG C. and 152 DEG C. and pressures of 9, 5 and 4 atmospheres respectively. Steam is produced in a boiler 3 at a pressure of 10 atmospheres and 180 DEG C. During the passage from the strainer 5 to the evaporator 2A no substantial precipitation of solids takes place from the aqueous liquid, and during the evaporation in evaporator 2A such fine particles of solids as are present in the liquid will be dissolved. A concentrated glue water containing about 50 per cent of solids is taken from evaporator 2C and may be dried to produce cattle food or cooked and marketed in semi-fluid condition.
