254,307. Nacken, R., (Assignee of Jaeger, G.). June 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Optical apparatus. - Japanese pearls with mother-of-pearl cores are distinguished from natural pearls by examining them in a moving or stationary magnetic or electric field, the Jananese pearls tending to adjust themselves with the stratification of the mother-of-pearl substance of the core in the direction of the lines of force while natural pearls are unaffected. The change in the field of force or in the position of the pearl may be transmitted to an indicator or the change in position may be measured directly. The pearl may be suspended freely on a thread between the poles of an electromagnet or in a liquid of approximately the same specific gravity as the pearl, or between two liquids one of higher specific gravity and the other of lower specific gravity than the pearl. The pearl may be moved in the field and the change in the field produced transmitted to an indicator. Alternatively, the change in position of the pearl may be used to bring it into position favourable for an optical examination. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a further alternative in which the liquid may possess similar magnetic properties to the pearl so as to balance any departure in shape from a sphere. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
