223,329. Sayers, W. B. July 26, 1923. Teaching magnetism. - An apparatus for the observation of magnetic effects and which may also be used as an amusement device or for playing a game, consists of a plate of glass or other metallic or non-metallic material upon which objects made of magnetizable material may readily glide, and means for producing a magnetic field in proximity to the plate so as to cause the objects to locate themselves or gyrate upon the plate in accordance with the motion or varying intensity of the magnetic field. The device consists of a frame B on which a compound bar magnet F is mounted in gimbals E, a flat plate A and a spherical plate G of glass being arranged close to the ends of the magnet. Steel pins H, screws I, steel balls, or other magnetic objects when placed on the plate A, or close to the underside of the plate G, group themselves symmetrically about the axis of the magnet and gyrate or slide on the plates when the magnet swings on the gimbals. The magnet is preferably of cobalt chrome steel or it may consist of an electric magnet or a solenoid. The plates A, G may be mirrors, and the magnetic objects may be draped with paper or other light material and made to represent figures. The plates may be made of very thin iron sheet or of copper or silver, t'o modify the effects produced by the magnet. In using the device for playing a game, pins are dropped on to the plate A, the object being to cause the greatest number of pins to arrange themselves on the plate without being in contact with one another.
