The invention relates to a method and an object tracking device for radar-based tracking of objects external to the vehicle, as well as a corresponding motor vehicle. In the method, recorded radar detections are first assigned spatially and geometrically to object data sets that describe objects in a vehicle environment. A first and a second assignment hypothesis is set up for each of the object data records. The first assignment hypothesis assigns radar detections to the object data set only with regard to their Doppler speed. The second assignment hypothesis assigns the object data record only consistent radar detections with a common speed profile. Based on an evaluation of the two assignment hypotheses, the object data records are updated by assigning a corresponding selection of the provisionally assigned radar detection.
