Disclosed are a method and apparatus for automatic recognition of peripheral nerves in an ultrasound image based on a deep learning algorithm and measurement of a neural index. A method for measuring a neural index includes: obtaining a segmented image including a nerve bundle from an ultrasound image using a segmented image detection model based on a neural network; detecting an outline of the nerve bundle based on the obtained segmented image; determining an ellipse corresponding to the outline based on the outline of the nerve bundle; and estimating an index for the nerve bundle based on the determined ellipse, and providing the estimated index.
