Echinopine A(1)，a novel sesquiterpenoid with an unprecendented rean．angIemental skeleton named echinopane was isolated from the roots of Echinops spinosus．The structure of 1 were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis.The relative stereochemistry of 1 was assigned by comhination of NOESY correlations and a simulation analysis.Its methyl ester，echinopine B(2)，was also isolated from same source．A possible biosynthetic pathway for echinopine A(1)was discussed．
